I am a mother of three active boys ages 8, 7 and 4, a marathoner and a ninth generation farmer. I am passionate about food quality, safety and nutrition that my family eats and what we produce for others to eat.
I grew up on a farm/ranch operation in South Dakota and have been engaged in farming and production most of my life. My husband Roy and I farm near Grafton in North Dakota’s Red River Valley region. We grow sugarbeets, dry beans, potatoes and wheat.
I am a shareholder in the American Crystal Sugar Company and am a member of the Red River Valley Sugarbeet Growers Association (RRVSGA), the World Association of Beet and Cane Growers (WABCG) and the American Society of Sugarbeet Technologists. I serve as an independent expert on sugar related topics for the GMO Answers website and I am on the Board of Directors of the Sugar Industry Biotechnology Council. I have published articles for Sugar Producer magazine, the WABCG, the Red River Valley Sugarbeet Growers Association newsletter and the British Sugarbeet Review magazine in Cambs, United Kingdom. I am a member of the North Dakota Farm Bureau and serve on the Walsh County Farm Bureau Board of Directors. I am also a participant in the 2014 Rural Leadership North Dakota program and a classroom volunteer at my children’s elementary school.
I graduated from the University of North Dakota in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. During college I worked at the Aberdeen American News and Farm Forum in Aberdeen, South Dakota, and the Emporia Gazette in Emporia, Kansas. I wrote about agricultural and community issues and helped edit the Farm Forum. In high school I participated in track and field, Journalism City at Girls State and was a page in the South Dakota state legislature. I was an active member of 4-H and FFA, and competed in horse showing and judging, and Horse Quiz Bowl.
